Majority of Dr. Nizam’s referrals for hip and knee conditions come through word of mouth, mainly from our patients. They are usually the patients’ family members, relatives, neighbours, friends or colleagues / clients.
Most other referrals are made through local GPs who may be aware of our innovative bikini anterior hip replacement techniques and enhanced recovery program for hip and knee replacement surgery or other successful orthopaedic procedures as they have had other patients in their practice treated by us.
Referrals are also made from physiotherapists and allied health teams who are also aware of Dr. Nizam’s rapid recovery program after joint replacements and other orthopaedic surgical procedures.
We ensure you are booked to see Dr. Nizam as soon as a spot is available in our busy practice.
If it is an urgent appointment please let our staff know.
A lot of patients have already researched on the inter-net about hip and knee surgery and orthopaedic surgeons online. It is important for individuals to understand that sometimes the vast information on the web can be overwhelming and confusing to them despite most websites being informative.
When choosing a surgeon, its best the patient aligns with someone they will feel confident and comfortable with.
Our practice does see referrals for second opinions for certain procedures both local and international.
We also collaborate with other surgeons when necessary for second opinions as well.
We have several helpful reception staff from 9 am till 5 pm from Monday to Friday to help with all patient queries.
We have a central number where patients can ring up and if we are busy, please do leave a message and we will ring back.
Alternatively patients can leave an online query and we can call you and book your appointment for you at a convenient time.
When you come for your Appointment please remember to obtain and bring the following:
It is very important that all patients are informed and educated about their condition / diagnosis & treatment options : Operative or Non-operative options.
Dr. Nizam will discuss in detail any proposed treatments if surgery is being carried out, including the benefits and associated risks of surgery at consultation.
Once a patient agrees to have surgery, a further detailed booklet will also be sent to the patient. ALL patients will need to read this booklet which can be upto 15-30 pages detailing the reason for surgery, details of surgery, pre operative and post operative care and any precautions including specific exercises after the relevant surgery.
We have a dedicated team including reception staff, Nursing staff , physicians and anaesthetists who will make the pre operative journey as smooth as possible.
It is important that once the surgery is booked you read the relevant booklet that will be sent to you that will highlight all the important aspects.
A nurse and then an anaesthetist will also ring all patients to ensure they follow our strict protocols to ensure best outcomes.
The relevant procedure will be explained to you in detail by Dr. Nizam, followed by the booklet that will be sent to you.
You will be given a time for your surgery. Please make sure you are at the hospital on time and give enough time to allow for traffic.
You will usually be contacted by the relevant hospital as well.
Fasting times are usually discussed, if unsure please clarify this with us.
The anaesthetist would have already discussed about the anaesthetic.
Thorough preparation will ensure everything goes smoothly. Dr Nizam will DO ALL the procedures and will usually have an assistant to help. There will also be an accredited orthopaedic fellow who will observe and help with the procedures and he/she will be educated on the surgical techniques and carry out orthopaedic research where necessary.
Dr. Nizam usually works with operating room staff familiar with his protocols in theatre.
You will be transferred to recovery by the anaesthetist and anaesthetic nurse.
The nurses in recovery will ensure all patients have ice therapy, mechanical thromboprophylaxis instituted to prevent blood clots, any operative site discomfort managed and any other clinical issues addressed before being transferred to the ward or in rare cases the intensive care (patients with very significant pre surgery medical problems – for overnight observation)
Dr. Nizam usually sees his patients in recovery and then on the ward on the same day or the day after. A physician will also see the patient on the ward to manage medical issues.
We start to combat pain even before the patient even goes into the operating theatre.
We establish an effective local anaesthetic block with a cocktail anaesthetic mixture at the time of surgery. Our superior soft tissue protecting surgical technique and the cocktail mix will also reduce post operative bleeding / swelling and any requirement for transfusion.
We numb all the parts which have been operated on and which may generate pain.
Another pathway involves oral medications to control pain. Injections available, if required.
A pain controlling skin patch will be applied as well, which also contains a slow release analgesic.
This will vary if patients have intolerance to certain medications.
All patients are usually walking 3-5 hours after surgery.
Rehab is not usually necessary with our enhanced recovery program after hip and knee joint replacements.
However there are some patients who live alone and cant go home. They will be sent to rehab until safe to return home. Dr. Nizam will discuss this before surgery.
Exercises for particular surgical procedures are usually in the booklet sent before surgery.
It is important that you read Dr. Nizam’s booklet before the relevant surgery which highlights how to boost your energy reserves before surgery to achieve optimal outcomes.
If you have any dietary concerns or have diabetes, please let our staff/physician/anaesthetist know.
Follow up appointments are usually made before the patient is discharged home from hospital. However if it is a weekend, the patients are kindly asked to ring on the Monday (for day cases procedures).
